Al-Zaytouna Centre offers its new Arabic book “Islamic Resistance Movement-Hamas: Studies of Thought and Experience,” for free download. The book is authored by a select of experts specialized in the Palestinian issue in addition to contributions by five Hamas leaders. The 672-page book is edited by Prof. Dr. Mohsen Mohammad Saleh.
The book is divided into two parts; the first of which includes 11 refereed studies regarding Hamas and its experience. The articles present a historical overview of the emergence of Hamas and its development as one of the most important Palestinian resistance movements, and as a movement which enjoys wide popularity in Palestinian circles, as well as one which adopts Islam as a creed and methodology.
The studies tackle Hamas’ political vision and its stance towards Israel, the peace process and Palestinian factions. They also present Hamas’ perspective towards political and social reform as well as the Movement’s relations on the Arab, Islamic and international levels.

Publication information: Arabic Title: Harakat al-Muqawamah al-Islamiyyah Hamas: Dirasat fi al-Fikr wa al-Tajrubah (Islamic Resistance Movement-Hamas: Studies of Thought and Experience) Edited by: Prof. Dr. Mohsen Mohammad Saleh Published in: 2014 (1st Edition) Hardcover: 672 pages Price: $25 |
The other part of the book includes contributions by five senior Hamas leaders attempting to answer a miscellany of questions regarding different issues appertaining to the Movement. A study by Khalid Mish’al, head of Hamas Political Bureau, which is entitled “Hamas: Milestones in Thought and Experience.” A second study entitled “Hamas: A Reading in the Vision and Governance Experience” is contributed by Isma‘il Haniyyah, deputy head of Hamas Political Bureau and head of the Gaza caretaker government. Usama Hamdan has also addressed “Hamas’ International Relations,” while Sami Khatir, a member of Hamas Political Bureau discussed “Hamas’ Perspective on Managing the Conflict with the Zionist Enemy.”
The book includes an appendix of major documents related to Hamas and its experience since the issuance of its charter in 1987 until the memorandum of enforcement of the Palestinian reconciliation agreement between Fatah and Hamas (Al-Shati’ Agreement) in 2014 besides a number of important documents issued between the two years.
The book took around three years for its completion while taking into account keeping all its data and information up-to-date.
The book has tried to maintain two principles, the first of which is the commitment to methods of scientific research and subsequent requirements of accuracy, objectivity and documentation. The second is the attempt to present Hamas as it really is, whether by the contributions of specialized researches, who are well informed of Hamas and its experience; or by the contributions of Hamas leaders, who have addressed a number of issues and presented a more comprehensive picture of the Movement.
This book is indeed one of the most specialized references regarding Hamas thought and experience, and it is an indispensible source for those interested in studying the Movement and understanding it.
