Al Zaytouna Centre for Studies and Consultations in Beirut has published a new book entitled Palestinian Media Discourse Towards the Palestinian Resistance, by Professor Rami Mahmoud Khreis.
This 136-page book is his thesis for Master’s degree in Journalism and Media from the Faculty of Arts in the Islamic University in Gaza in 2014.
This book is an analytic and field comparative study that aims to monitor and analyze the Palestinian media discourse regarding the Palestinian resistance. In addition, it tackles the different roles and attributes of the effective forces, and the proofs and frameworks adopted by those who use such a discourse. Moreover, this book compares and contrasts the discourse of Felesteen and al-Hayat al-Jadida newspapers. It also tries to find out the roles and positions of communicators in the two newspapers regarding the Palestinian resistance, and the extent that their political and ideological tendencies reflected on such positions. Also, the factors that had an influence on shaping their tendencies.
The study includes an introduction and three chapters. The first chapter deals with the attributes of the discourse of both newspapers towards the Palestinian resistance, while the second aims to study the communicators in the two newspapers. The third chapter includes a discussion of the general results of the study and its recommendations, as well as its sources and references.
This is a descriptive study that uses the discourse analysis approach, survey method, and correlational method where systematic comparison is carried out.
The study data was collected through media discourse analysis form and a survey. The researcher used the theory of media frameworks and that of communication.
The researcher chose al-Hayat al-Jadida and Felesteen newspapers a sample for the study. The first is a daily newspaper affiliated to Fatah movement, issued by the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank. Whereas the second is a daily newspaper issued in Gaza Strip and is affiliated to Hamas movement. The study covers the period 2007–2012, for this was the time that witnessed the Palestinian division, where variation in views and disagreements between the two movements had its impact on the media of the two sides.
Furthermore, the book studies the communicators, and how the ideological and political tendencies of each writer shape his/her discourse. The articles that discuss the issue of resistance were selected using purposive sampling approach. The newspapers were selected using the systematic random sampling and the constructed week sampling. Communicators in the newspapers were selected through purposive sampling approach. The author studied 427 issues of each newspaper, totaling 854 issues.
