Al-Zaytouna Centre for Studies and Consultations published a new volume in its Arabic series “The Palestine Documents” series, “The Palestine Documents for the Year 2012.” This is the 8th volume in a series, which has been issued since 2005. It was edited by Prof. Dr. Mohsen Mohammad Saleh and Wael Ahmad Sa‘ad.
The 698-page book contains 344 documents that trace the key events related to the Palestine issue throughout 2012, offering a comprehensive, balanced and objective portrayal of its developments during that year.
The book is among the most significant periodic publications issued by Al-Zaytouna, adhering to rigorous criteria in the selection of documents. These are categorized according to their relevance and significance, thereby mapping the events and developments related to the Palestine issue throughout 2012 and providing an objective overview of the broader landscape.
The editorial team was careful to account for the various influential factors at the Palestinian, Arab, Islamic, Israeli and international levels, while considering the relative weight, degree of influence and extent of participation of key actors in the unfolding events.
An analysis of the documents reveals that they captured the atmosphere of the Arab Spring in 2012, alongside pronounced Israeli concern over the strategic environment turning increasingly hostile. Within the Palestinian context, attempts at reconciliation continued, bolstered by the Doha Agreement in February 2012; however, setbacks remained the defining characteristic of the reconciliation process. Gaza Strip (GS) endured a major Israeli offensive from 14 to 21/11/2012, which Israel designated “Pillar of Cloud,” while the resistance dubbed it “The War of Stones of Baked Clay (Hijarat al-Sijjil).” The operation was distinguished by robust political support for GS from Egypt under President Muhammad Morsi, as well as significant backing from Qatar, Türkiye and other Arab actors. That year also saw, on 29/11/2012, the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly approve Palestine as a non-member observer state.
The importance of this volume, which was the product of over a year of sustained work, lies in its provision of extensive documentary material encompassing all dimensions and developments of the Palestine issue. In this way, it contributes to enriching the Palestinian library with a valuable reference that serves researchers and scholars of Palestinian studies, as well as universities, research centers, and academic institutions.
