Al-Zaytouna Centre for Studies and Consultations has published a book, 13th in the series Am I Not a Human?, in Arabic, examining the suffering of Palestinians at the Israeli Roadblocks in the West Bank. It offers a comprehensive and methodologically grounded account of the hardships inflicted by the Israeli occupation on the Palestinian people, combining scholarly documentation with a narrative that appeals to both reason and conscience. The Suffering of Palestinians at the Israeli Roadblocks in the West Bank was edited by Dr. Mohsen Mohammad Saleh and authored by Fatima ‘Itani and Mohammad Dawood.

The 111-page book examines the hardships faced by Palestinians at Israeli checkpoints in the West Bank (WB) and documents the most serious violations committed by the occupation against them at these roadblocks, which are spread throughout the WB in various forms.

The book examines Israeli policies aimed at fragmenting Palestinian territory and humiliating Palestinians. It then provides a legal overview of international and humanitarian law, demonstrating the illegality of these barriers. It then traces the evolution of the number and types of barriers in the WB between 2001 and 2014.

The book highlights how the establishment of Israeli checkpoints in the WB restricts people’s movement, disrupts their daily lives, and exhausts them economically, mentally and socially. It also notes that, despite their different forms, all checkpoints serve the same purpose: to undermine Palestinian resilience.

Israeli checkpoints are widely regarded as among the most severe manifestations of human rights violations, as they are closely associated with practices that infringe upon people’s lives and undermine their dignity, which is protected under international charters and conventions.

The book notes that the guiding principle behind the demand for the immediate removal of these barriers is the illegitimacy of the occupation itself. These roadblocks effectively hold back Palestinians’ aspirations for life in a free country, where they can enjoy freedom of movement, work, education, and other fundamental rights.
