Al-Zaytouna Centre is pleased to present this peer-reviewed study, in Arabic, by Uthman ‘Ashra Badr, entitled “Zionism and the West: From Orientalism to Islamophobia.” This academic study defines the relation between Orientalism, on the one hand, and Zionism and Islamophobia on the other. It is based on two hypotheses; first, that Orientalism paved the way for Zionism when trying to prove the historical right of the Jews in Palestine; and the second is that Islamophobia is an extension of Orientalism. The paper adopted the historical method, and the author has also investigated, analyzed and compared some texts and reports. It consists of three main sections: the Orientalist view; the relation between Zionism, colonialism and orientalism; and how Orientalism has evolved to be replaced by Islamophobia.

This study can be summarized in that some orientalists had paved the way for the European colonial campaigns, and some had even served colonialism directly. For Orientalism, through “knowledge,” prepared all the conditions for imposing colonial control over Palestine. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Orientalism developed and turned into Islamophobia, where they both share the same ideas. By studying this transformation, we conclude that there is an invisible connection between the works of the Orientalists and the “experts,” on one hand, and the attempt to prove the historical right of the Zionists in Palestine, on the other hand, hence any form of “rejection” of this “right” becomes categorized as “terrorism.” This will necessarily lead to the portrayal of the conflict between the Palestinians and the Israelis as one between two nationalities with the same rights over the land of Palestine; the Palestinian Nationality and “Jewish Nationality.” Their objective is to obscure the reality of the Zionist colonial project in Palestine and the fact that the conflict is between an occupying colonizer and an indigenous population.
