Al-Zaytouna Centre is pleased to present this peer-reviewed study, in Arabic, by Hanin Mrad, entitled “The Impact of the 1967 War on the Palestinian National Project), 2017.”

This paper examines the impact of the June 1967 War on the Palestinian national project and explores how its outcome shaped Arab approaches toward the Palestine issue. It employs a critical historical analysis framework, focusing on the evolution of the Palestinian national project and the Palestine Liberation Organization’s (PLO’s) relations with various actors. In addition, it draws on Michel Foucault’s discourse analysis approach to examine the Palestinian National Charter and Covenant, as well as the fundamental transformations introduced to the latter following the June 1967 defeat.

The paper is divided into two main sections. The first examines the PLO from its establishment until the end of the 1967 War (1964–1967), while the second analyzes the Palestinian national project in the aftermath of the war.

The significance of this paper lies in its examination of the enduring consequences of the 1967 War, whose effects continue to shape the region today. Moreover, it contributes to the literature through its comparative analysis of the Palestinian National Charter and the Palestinian National Covenant. The paper concludes that the war marked a turning point in the evolution of the Palestinian national project by reinforcing Palestinian national identity and aspirations for statehood. At the same time, it introduced enduring dilemmas regarding the definition of Palestinian identity and the territorial boundaries of the Palestine envisioned for liberation.
