Al-Zaytouna Centre in collaboration with Rwaq Istanbul Foundation held a situation assessment training course, on 24–25/11/2018, in Istanbul, Turkey. The 12-hour course was facilitated by Prof. Dr. Mohsen Mohammad Saleh, and attended by 25 trainees.

At first, the difference between news reports, political analyses and situation assessments was explained. Then, a number of useful methods for analysis and formation of political vision were discussed, such as political feasibility analysis, political risk analysis, factors affecting the strategic conflict assessment, and the decision making process.

The participants learned about forming a political vision and how to build perceptions, and discussed the steps for putting the possible scenarios and the standards for choosing them. Saleh explained how to identify the general trends of events and indicators, their driving forces, how to use the Impact vs uncertainty matrix, and how to draft a situation assessment.

A workshop was held as a part of the course, where the participants were divided into groups and prepared situation assessments, applying their newly learned techniques.

Also noted was the distinguished interaction of participants, who came from Egypt, Yemen, Palestine, Iraq, Libya, Tunisia, Algiers, Lebanon and Eretria. This course was part of a training course series that the Rwaq Istanbul Foundation offered in collaboration with al-Zaytouna Centre and Dr. Saleh. It started with the “Eagle Eye: The Political Formation of Contemporary World and Its Future Trends” training course, then the “Political Analysis” training course and ended with the “Situation Assessment” training course.
