Al-Zaytouna Centre is pleased to present this peer-reviewed study, in Arabic, by Fatima Hassan ‘Itani, entitled “Israeli Unit 8200 and its Role in Serving Israeli Espionage Technology.”
Technological advances, particularly in communications, have generated substantial social and economic benefits. At the same time, however, they have introduced new challenges that have facilitated the expansion of electronic espionage.
Accordingly, this study examines the historical development of Israeli intelligence activities, focusing particularly on the origins of Military Intelligence Unit 8200, which specializes in technological surveillance and intelligence gathering and is regarded by some analysts as comparable to the US National Security Agency (NSA).
This study seeks to uncover Israel’s undisclosed objectives in developing and exploiting advanced technologies to secure political, economic and security gains internationally. It examines how Israel deploys these technologies and provides them to selected companies, governments, states, and other entities, enabling them to access extensive information about populations with relative ease.
This study is grounded in the need for an accurate and objective understanding of the adversary. It does not seek to exaggerate its capabilities or undermine those confronting the Israeli project. Rather, a clear understanding of the facts and a systematic assessment of them are essential to mobilizing resources, setting priorities, and ultimately strengthening the effectiveness of efforts to confront the Israeli project.
