Al-Zaytouna Centre is pleased to present this peer-reviewed study, in Arabic, by Awni Fares, entitled “Until the Last Breath: The Military Resistance Groups in Silwad Town, Palestine 1967–1971.”
This study contributes to documenting the local history of Palestinian armed resistance in the occupied territory by tracing the histories of two feda’iyyeen groups from the town of Silwad between 1967 and 1971. It examines their origins, the factors underlying their formation, their objectives and methods, their links to the resistance abroad, and their principal figures. It also explores the challenges they faced, their major achievements, and the policies Israel used to suppress them. Finally, the study identifies their broader characteristics and draws on their experience to deepen understanding of the Palestinian armed struggle in the occupied territory during this period.
The two groups were significant as among the earliest armed resistance groups to emerge in the West Bank after the June 1967 War. They were notable for their willingness to sacrifice, refusal to accept the defeat of June 1967, and ability to challenge Israel’s military and intelligence forces. Moreover, they left a lasting legacy of resistance in the memory of subsequent generations and reflected the aspirations of a current within the resistance factions that sought to mobilize the occupied territory and strengthen its role in the struggle. At the same time, however, improvisation, emotionalism, haste, and limited experience constrained their effectiveness and achievements in the field.
The study is organized into four sections: “Military Groups in Silwad: Organizational Structures and Field Performance”; “The Continuation of Resistance”; “Military Groups in Silwad: Conclusions and Observations”; and “An Evaluative Conclusion.” It draws on diverse sources, including oral interviews, local magazines and newsletters, Arab and Hebrew newspapers, Palestinian diaries, encyclopedias, and memoirs.
