Al-Zaytouna Centre for Studies and Consultations held a memorial seminar for the late Prof. Dr. Hassan Ahmed Ibrahim, a member of its advisory board, on 23/4/2025, via Zoom. The event paid tribute to his distinguished legacy of scholarly and humanitarian contributions and acknowledged his pivotal role in supporting Arab and Islamic causes—foremost among them the Palestine issue. A distinguished group of academics and researchers who had accompanied him throughout his academic journey took part in the seminar.
The seminar was moderated by Prof. Dr. Ahmad Ibrahim Abushouk, Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at Qatar University, who offered a reflection on the late professor’s virtues and pioneering contributions to historical research and academia. He described him in three words: “humility, humanity and academic dedication,” and affirmed that Prof. Dr. Ibrahim was a role model in both academic research and institutional engagement.
The seminar was opened by the General Manager of Al-Zaytouna Centre, Prof. Dr. Mohsen Mohammad Saleh, who highlighted the late scholar’s many virtues. He praised his distinguished standing in the field of historical studies, noting his remarkable dynamism, productivity, and deep commitment to the causes of the Ummah (Muslim nation)—particularly the Palestine issue, which remained close to his heart. Saleh also emphasized the vital role Prof. Dr. Hassan Ibrahim played in supporting Al-Zaytouna Centre through his active membership on its Board of Consultants and his outstanding contributions to the translation and review of English texts—especially those related to the Centre’s periodic The Palestine Strategic Report. He added that Ibrahim embodied a rare blend of qualities: a principled human being, an exceptional academic, an inspiring role model, a capable administrator, and a patriotic figure deeply engaged with the concerns of his people and Ummah.
The seminar featured heartfelt tributes from several academics who had known the late professor personally and accompanied him throughout his scholarly journey. Among the speakers was Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Mohamed Zein, Professor of Islamic Studies and Comparative Religion, who shared reflections on his time with Professor Hassan at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). He spoke of his humility, deep knowledge and exceptional administrative acumen, as well as his constant readiness to offer support and comfort—whether financial, moral or intellectual.
Prof. Dr. Abdullahi Ali Ibrahim, Professor of African and Islamic History at the University of Missouri, USA, also delivered a speech on behalf of Prof. Dr. Hassan Ibrahim’s colleagues and friends. He highlighted his distinguished scholarly and human qualities, as well as his refined and graceful demeanor.
Prof. Dr. Fadwa Abdel Rahman Ali Taha, Professor of Modern History at the University of Khartoum, spoke on behalf of Professor Ibrahim’s students. She highlighted his significant role in training generations of researchers through his clear and accessible teaching style and his methodological rigor in academic supervision. These qualities contributed to the distinction of his graduates, many of whom have gone on to hold senior and leadership positions in academic and public institutions both within Sudan and abroad. His supportive relationships with them have continued well beyond their graduation.
Dr. Khalifa Mohamed Omer, Head of the History Department at the University of Khartoum, spoke on behalf of the department, emphasizing the importance of the late scholar’s academic contributions. He called for proper attention to his academic legacy and announced the department’s plans to gather his research and publish his remaining works to preserve them in the national memory.
In his speech, Prof. Dr. Hatim al-Siddiq Muhammad Ahmed, Director of the Red Sea Basin Research and Studies Center and Vice President of the African Historians Union, spoke on behalf of the center. He highlighted the late scholar’s pivotal role in fostering research and scientific collaboration, praising his exceptional humility, vast knowledge, and unwavering concern for the well-being of his colleagues and community.
Rabah al-Sadiq al-Mahdi, a researcher in Sudanese folklore, shared her experience working with Prof. Dr. Hassan Ibrahim on scientific committees. She praised his exemplary character and exceptional professional precision, which left a lasting positive impact on all those who collaborated with him.
Prof. Dr. Ahmed ‘Awad ‘Adeel, a tropical medicine consultant, delivered a speech on behalf of the Prof. Dr. Hassan Ibrahim’s family, expressing their deep gratitude to everyone who participated and contributed to this tribute. He spoke about some personal aspects of the deceased, who was a model of responsibility and care, leaving a lasting positive impact on the hearts of his family members.
The floor was opened for interventions from colleagues, acquaintances, and students of Prof. Dr. Hassan Ibrahim, who expressed their sorrow at his passing. They reflected on the key milestones of his life, affirming that his scholarly legacy will remain alive in memory and in the hearts of all.
