Since the 1980s, Christian communities across Africa have witnessed a marked rise in the Pentecostal movement, which has become one of the most striking features of the continent’s social and political landscapes. Israel has sought to capitalize on the intellectual affinities and historical interactions between Pentecostalism and Zionism, working to translate this convergence into practical cooperation with African Pentecostal churches and institutions in ways that advance Israeli interests in Africa and support its broader strategic outlook.
Al-Zaytouna Centre for Studies and Consultations has published a refereed study entitled “Israel and the Pentecostal Movement in Africa,” by researcher Mahmud ‘Abdo Salem. The study aims to examine Israel’s relationship with the Pentecostal movement in Africa and to identify the various ways in which Israel seeks to benefit from this relationship.

This study examines the Christian Pentecostal movement, which has witnessed rapid global expansion within the Christian community, currently numbering approximately 600 million adherents and attracting some 35 thousand new followers daily. It traces the movement’s origins, general historical development, manifestations and stages of evolution, while situating its emergence within the African context and highlighting its growing influence among adherents of traditional churches. Moreover, the study explores the political and social ramifications of the movement across African countries.
Of particular interest are the theoretical and practical positions adopted by Pentecostalism with regard to Zionism, as well as the consequent impact on relations between African Pentecostal movements and Israel.
The study anticipates that the continued expansion of Pentecostalism/ Charismatic Christianity in Africa, and the widening of its social and political presence and influence, will further amplify Israel’s gains across the African arena.
