Al-Zaytouna Centre for Studies and Consultations has published a scholarly paper, in Arabic, entitled “Sport and Competitions in the Arab – Israeli Conflict,” authored by Mahmoud ‘Abdou Salem.

It examines the function of sport and athletic competitions within the Arab–Israeli conflict, and explores the various dimensions of the role played by sport in this conflict, both historically and in the contemporary period.”

It demonstrates that sport and its associated competitions have served as a significant instrument in this conflict, as well as a vehicle for constructing national identity, employed by both sides in their confrontation.

The study highlights how the Arab side relied on “sports boycotts” to advance its political objectives, in contrast to Israel’s adoption of a “sporting normalization” policy. It further traces how the Arab–Israeli conflict manifested in sporting arenas and how its characteristics and contradictions became entrenched over more than a century. This trajectory culminated in Operation al-Aqsa Flood and the recent war on Gaza Strip.
