• Has the policy of arresting and torturing Palestinian female prisoners in Israeli prisons evolved into a systematic approach to violating their rights and human dignity?
• Has the international community’s failure to hold Israel accountable contributed to the continuation of these violations, particularly during the genocidal war on the Gaza Strip (GS)?
Al-Zaytouna Centre for Studies and Consultations has published an academic paper entitled “Violations of International Humanitarian Law by the Israeli Occupation: A Case Study of Palestinian Female Prisoners (2023–2025),
” by Dr. Eman Abo Alkhair. The paper examines the conditions of Palestinian female prisoners in Israeli prisons, who have been subjected to arrest and torture since 1967, in a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, particularly the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949 and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) of 1979.
The study aims to review the rights guaranteed to women under international law, assess the extent of Israeli violations against them, document the methods of humiliation used against female prisoners during arrest and interrogation, examine the harsh living conditions inside prisons, assess the health and psychological effects of imprisonment, and document violations committed against them during the genocidal war on GS (2023–2025).
The paper employs historical and descriptive approaches to trace the trajectory of female prisoners’ suffering, numbers and developments; describe the conditions of arrest and interrogation; and examine the position of international law on these issues. The research problem centers on the ongoing violations of Palestinian women’s rights and the failure of international bodies to hold perpetrators accountable.
The study concludes that Israel has subjected Palestinian female prisoners to various forms of torture in prisons and violated their human dignity, in clear breach of international humanitarian law and international human rights treaties. It recommends exerting pressure on Israel to release the female prisoners and hold those responsible for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity accountable.
