Al-Zaytouna Centre for Studies and Consultations has published a new policy paper titled “Assessments of Israel-Türkiye Flashpoints in Syria,” by Palestinian expert on Israeli affairs, Ibrahim ‘Abdul Karim.

Since the onset of the new political era in Syria on 8/12/2024, both Israeli and Turkish actors have been prominently active in the country’s landscape, through various channels, whether via their respective stances toward the new regime or through immediate and potential direct confrontations between them.

Recent developments in Syria have intensified Israeli concerns about Türkiye’s current regional policies, especially amid heightened tensions between the two since the outbreak of the war in Gaza Strip (GS). This has set them on a trajectory of multifaceted confrontation, reflecting a unique regional dynamic shaped by broader international competition over influence and strategic interests.
This study analyzes Israeli media and research assessments that shape the landscape of the ongoing confrontation between Israel and Türkiye in Syria. It reveals the nature of this conflict, which is practically shaped by their bilateral relations, oscillating between two distinct poles observed in recent years: outright hostility (since the Gaza conflict) and a state of quasi-normal relations tinged with tensions (prior to that conflict).

This study provides a detailed analytical overview of the main points of confrontation between Türkiye and Israel in the Syrian arena. It examines Turkish military support for Syria; Israeli expansion and entrenchment in Syria alongside efforts to reduce tensions; the presence of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Kurdish groups within the conflict zone between Türkiye and Israel; the maritime border demarcation between Türkiye and Syria and its regional and international repercussions; the gas pipeline project from Qatar through Türkiye to Europe; the “Development Road” project integrating Syria into Turkish logistical corridors; and the challenges posed by these two initiatives.
