Al-Zaytouna Centre has published an academic paper by Dr. Saleh al-Naami, in Arabic, titled “The Messianic Religious Current in Israel after 7/10/2023 (Operation al-Aqsa Flood): Discourse and Influence.”
This paper examines the role of the messianic religious current in shaping the policies adopted by Israel following Operation al-Aqsa Flood on 7/10/2023. It traces the historical transformations that led to the emergence of this Jewish messianic current, highlighting the strategies through which it consolidated power and expanded its influence, including its penetration of Israeli elite institutions and its mobilization of identity-based divisions within society.
The paper further analyzes the post-7/10/2023 trajectory of its discourse, focusing on the religious narratives and quasi-legal interpretations advanced by rabbinical authorities. It argues that these frameworks have significantly shaped governmental and military orientations, contributing to the legitimization of the genocide carried out by Israel in Gaza Strip (GS), which remains ongoing.
The paper also analyzes the mechanisms through which the messianic current has shaped Israeli policy after Operation al-Aqsa Flood, particularly the role of its political and military leadership in planning and directing the war in GS. It further examines their efforts to advance the Judaization of the West Bank, alter the status quo at al-Aqsa Mosque, and intensify the mistreatment of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons, alongside their success in reshaping core tenets of Israeli national security doctrine.
The paper further anticipates that representatives of this current within the Israeli government and military will continue to deepen the humanitarian crisis in GS through further territorial encroachment and the sustained obstruction of reconstruction. It also argues that, under the growing influence of this current, Israel is likely to rely increasingly on disproportionate force in its military engagements with Arab and Muslim actors engaged in conflict with it.
