Al-Zaytouna Centre for Studies and Consultations published a new book in Arabic entitled “Five Thousand Days in the World of Barzakh (Isthmus): The Memoirs of the Prisoner Hassan Abd al-Rahman Salameh in Solitary Confinement in Israeli Prisons.”
The 224-page book is the diaries of Palestinian prisoner Hassan Abd al-Rahman Salameh, who was sentenced by the Israelis to 48 life sentences and 35 years in prison, of which he spent about five thousand days in solitary confinement; a life closer to the world of the dead “isthmus.”

The author is the well-known Qassam military leader, and companion of Muhammad al-Dhaif and Yahya Ayyash. He carried out “The Holy Revenge” operation in retaliation for the 1996 assassination of Ayyash, and became a fugitive from the Israeli forces. After being seriously injured, he was arrested and he is still now detained in Israeli prisons.
This is one of the most important books that describe the suffering of prisoners in Israeli prisons. It is a historical testimony and document that exposes the ugliness, injustice, oppression and inhumanity of the occupation.
Khalid Mish‘al wrote the book’s introduction, considering the book not just like any other prisoner’s diary, rather, as the author called it, it describes the events of thirteen years imprisonment, where the prisoner is neither spending the usual life in prisons nor was he experiencing death. It was an in-between life, where the sadistic Israeli wardens would take revenge on the members of resistance forces, causing them the utmost possible harm, and pushing them to resign to despair and surrender.
Salameh explains the fierce battle of prisoners with the Israeli prison authority, where they are stripped of their rights, while having in return nothing but their belief in Allah and the justice of their cause. On the other hand, Salameh highlights the wonderful aspects of the steadfastness of prisoners, describing many situations and telling stories the reflect their pride, dignity, sacrifice, love, nostalgia, sadness and joy.
