Al-Zaytouna Centre for Studies and Consultations has issued the Information File (29) in Arabic entitled, “The Development of the Reconciliation Process and the Palestinian Elections (1/5/2020–30/9/2021),” and it is offered for free download.

The stumbling of Palestinian reconciliation file constituted one of the most serious challenges and dilemmas for the Palestinian national project during the past years. The postponement of the muchly awaited legislative elections that were scheduled for May 2021 has for sure increased the fragility of the Palestinian situation, and created a new obstacle against national unity and revival the Palestinian national project.

Undoubtedly, there are many factors that led to the failure of reconciliation. Primarily, the weak foundations and rules of the Palestinian political system, for they became bound by the terms and outcomes of the Oslo Accords, while the legitimacy of the Palestinian components and their acceptance in a unified national body became bound by their commitment and recognition of “international legitimacy,” regardless if the latter agrees on the rights of the Palestinian people and believes in the justice of their cause or not. In addition, there is contradiction and schism between Palestinians; because there are two Palestinian projects that are not only contradictory in the means, but also in goals and objectives.

Settling the Palestinian reconciliation file requires a re-reading of the Palestinian conditions and outcomes, and reconsidering the feasibility of a Palestinian national project dependent on Oslo outcomes, which have been proven to be a failure. National unity and putting the Palestinian political house in order in proportion to the weights of the active Palestinian forces, are the first steps for the advancement of the Palestinian project and the achievement of liberation and return.
