The course of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, the Israeli aggression on Gaza Strip (GS), and the potential consequences, particularly in the context of Lebanon, were discussed in a panel discussion held by al-Zaytouna Centre for Studies & Consultation on 8/11/2023, with the participation of researchers and experts in Palestinian affairs.
Prof. Dr. Mohsen Mohammad Saleh opened the discussion stating that operation dealt a blow to Israel’s deterrence theory. He discussed the positions of the US and some major countries supporting Israel, and stressed that Operation Al-Aqsa Flood has proved that Palestinians cannot be subdued, and that the Palestine issue cannot be sidelined or closed.
The first session discussed the developments of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood Battle and the aggression against GS and its implications. The participants discussed the political climate that prevailed in the region and the world before the operation, highlighting the diminishing interest in the Palestine issue, the collapse of the peace process, and the escalation of plans to Judaize Jerusalem and al-Aqsa Mosque. The battle caused a significant strategic shakeup with far-reaching consequences for Israel, its security concept, and the erosion of Israeli society’s trust in its military. In contrast, it renewed Palestinian confidence in resistance and brought the Palestine issue back to the global stage, reaffirming the importance of liberation and the right of return.
Participants emphasized the significance of the timing of the operation, as it had a profound historical impact. They noted that Israel achieved no real “achievements” on the ground, except for the killing of Palestinian civilians in GS. All the internationally circulated ideas about post-battle scenarios, such as ending Hamas’s control over GS, finding alternatives to govern GS and the notion of Palestinian displacement, are considered unrealistic. The situation on the ground will determine the future of GS.
The second session focused on the repercussions of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood and the GS war on the Palestinian and Lebanese environments, and the role of academics and research centers in serving the Palestine issue. Participants discussed the practical implementation of the idea of unity of the arenas and fronts on the ground and stressed the necessity of a clear vision and an effective action plan to achieve this unity.
